What is sleep wellness and what is sleep treatment?
Sleep wellness is practical and also skills based approach. It involves incorporating a range of knowledge-based skills such as sleep hygiene, sleep environment, benefits of light, and healthy sleep. The key to embracing a wellness approach is adapting behavior and habits that are within the scope of practice of a Clinical Social Worker who has developed advanced knowledge of sleep. Sleep treatment is active, diagnostic, and provided by a Board Certified Sleep Physician. If you suspect you have a sleep disorder, please see a sleep physician.
How do you integrate sleep wellness and mental health treatment?
Sleep wellness provides the foundation for good mental health. During clinical assessment sleep health is part of the evaluation and is important to understand how sleep disturbances, sleep patterns, and environmental factors contribute to the emotional and psychological concerns. During the treatment planning portion, we will discuss integrated interventions such as relaxation techniques, and sleep hygiene which will complement the therapeutic approach. An individualized care approach is used to ensure your unique needs are addressed around sleep wellness and mental health treatment.
Why should I focus on sleep, my main concern is my mental health?
There is a relationship between sleep and mental health which goes both ways. We can go over evidence-based studies which show how sleep improvement enhances emotional regulation and mood. It also improves decision making and physical wellness. Learning about this relationship is the dynamic part of our approach.
Will my insurance pay for sleep wellness?
Since many mental health conditions involve issues with sleep quality and quantity, both can be worked on at the same time. Your mental health will be the primary concern indicated on your insurance claim.
I've seen other therapists previously, why didn't they address sleep?
The connection between sleep and mental health hasn't always been a major part of traditional therapy training. Over the years, research has shown just how deeply interconnected they are. Poor sleep can worsen conditions such as anxiety, depression, and executive functioning.
Why has my doctor not helped me more with these areas?
Most physicians are unaware of the contribution of sleep health to mental health. You should keep your doctor informed about your mental health treatment. As our work clarifies the relationship between sleep health and disorders, you can keep your doctor informed. Ideally, personalized medicine would account for this type of interaction. However, you are the best source for communicating how you feel. Step into your empowered self and share what you've learned.
Should I stop or do you advocate that I stop (or eventually stop) taking my psychiatric medications?
No, you must not stop your medications prescribed by a licensed physician. They are the only ones who can advise you about discontinuing your medications. They prescribed your medications after conducting a psychotic evaluation and your feedback is important to allow them the to have enough information to adjust your medications. Your monthly appointments help the psychiatrist make decisions on how to adjust your medications or change them. If you want me to coordinate with your psychiatrist, I will contact them to discuss our work.
